Maputo

Maputo is the capital of the country. During the colonial era Lourenço Marques, as it was then called, drew visitors from all over sub-saharan Africa to sample its fine prawns, busy night-life and European atmosphere. The city was badly damaged during the prolonged civil war, and many buildings were significantly degraded. However, Maputo is on the rise again. With hotels renovated for the meeting of the African Union in 2004, many pavement cafes, bars and restaurants open late into the night, a vibrant arts scene, including drama, music and visual arts, and the Elephant Reserve and Kruger Park within easy reach for safaris and day trips, Maputo is well worth a visit of a few days.

Hotel Polana

Maputo's most famous hotel is situated on one of the city's most exclusive avenues, with a great view of the Indian Ocean, 10 minutes drive from the airport. It is a large and luxurious hotel with pool, restaurant and bar.

Hotel’s sports facilities include tennis, bowling, sauna, massage, free-weights, cardiovascular and aerobics training, swimming pool and there are plenty of scenic walks along the undulating white cliffs that front the hotel and enjoy magnificent vistas out over the endless blue waters of Maputo Bay. The hotel can organise activities such as snorkelling, game fishing, scuba diving and horse riding trips.

Hotel Tivoli

Hotel Tivoli is a comfortable hotel in the centre of town which offers good value for money. It is situated in the heart of Maputo and is just 15 minutes drive from the airport. There are 72 rooms – 42 twins, 20 executive suites and 12 family suites, all with en-suite facilities, direct dial phones, Satellite TV, and air-conditioning. Internet is available, as well as 24 hour room service, a bar, restaurant and coffee shop, a fully equipped gym, and conference facilities for 200 delegates. Airport transfers are charged for and cost in the region of $6 per person each way. Rates include breakfast and Government taxes.

Hotel Villa das Mangas

Villa das Mangas has 24 rooms set around a swimming pool in the lush garden at the back of the hotel, and is conveniently central – an ideal place to overnight. There is a restaurant on site and secure parking.

Rooms cost from $90 for a double room per night including breakfast.

Cardoso Hotel

Hotel Cardoso is a four star hotel in Maputo, 5 minutes by car to the business centre of Maputo and just 15 minutes from Mavalane Airport (Maputo International Airport). There is ample parking on site, and the hotel offers a complimentary bus service to and from the airport between 08h00 and 21h00.

The 130 rooms (4 suites, 12 Executive rooms and 114 standard rooms) are all en-suite, air-conditioned, and have satellite TV, international direct-dial phones, hair-dryer, 24 hour room service, and Wireless Internet connection. There is a pool, restaurant and bar, gym, shops and excursions to the nearby islands for diving, fishing, snorkelling and relaxing.
There is secure parking for 70 cars, 2 conference rooms and a well-equipped fitness centre.

Airport transfers can be arranged and cost $5 per person each way.

Mozaika Guest House

Kaskazini recommends this delightful guest house in Maputo with a swimming pool, comfortable rooms and a safe, homely atmosphere. On site there is an exclusive bar for guests, a lounge, an Internet corner and secure parking. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, cable TV, direct dial telephone and tea and coffee facilities. Mozaika is special in that the rooms are cosy and individual and reflect a variety of influences from Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. Note the difference with the fluffy towels and the 100% cotton sheets…!
