Medjumbe Private Island

Medjumbe Private Island

Medjumbe is a more exclusive resort than its sister Matemo. For those seeking total isolation and pristine natural beauty, Medjumbe is the ideal honeymoon or romantic getaway island. The thirteen water-front chalets combine style, comfort and privacy, and the small size of the resort ensures individual attention and a peaceful sojourn. You can stroll around the island in a couple of hours, and admire the majestic lighthouse perched on the sharp corner.

Each chalet has its own Jacuzzi set in an open-air deck – a shell’s throw away from the virgin white sand on the beach. The Moorish feel infuses the beautifully appointed thatched chalets with timber decks, each featuring an en-suite bathroom with indoor shower and separate bath as well as a private outdoor shower. Chalets have air-conditioning, a cosy hammock, ceiling fans, mosquito screens and satellite TV.

The diving around Medjumbe Island is exceptional, with virgin reefs descending to unchartered depths. There are also excellent opportunities for fly-fishing off Medjumbe's long sand spit, and if you are a keen deep-sea fisherman, charter one of the luxurious boats with experienced crew for a full or half day adventure at sea. If you prefer to stay above the water, take a pedal boat out and explore the surrounding waters and enjoy the various colourful fish playfully chasing the boat! Other activities include kayaking, windsurfing and sailing, bird watching, water-skiing, wakeboarding and knee-boarding. At certain times of the year, the lucky visitor could witness turtles hatching from their (protected) nests, indeed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Otherwise, relax in the hammock outside your chalet and while away the sun-filled hours with nothing to hear but the waves lapping on the shore. After a full day enjoying the activities on offer, sit back with a sundowner cocktail whilst watching the dhows saunter moodily past at the convivial ‘Bahari’ bar next to the pool prior to sampling some of the fresh local seafood for dinner.

Transfers: Clients are transferred by light aircraft from Pemba, a 40 minute flight over the spectacular Archipelago. Flights cost $160 per person return from Pemba. Guests are restricted to 15 kilograms of luggage per person including hand luggage, which needs to be packed in soft bags.

Diving at Medjumbe

Medjumbe Private Island has something to suit everybody from the most experienced dive veteran to those of you who are sufficiently intrigued to take the plunge for the very first time. To the northwest of the resort is Sambi Sambi, a locally named reef which reaches from 90m below to within a few feet of the surface. Encrusted with a wide variety of hard coral structures this very large reef can supply divers with many days worth of exploration; the shallower areas provide countless reef fish with protection and are also enjoyable if you are snorkelling while the drop off is a scene of sizeable lettuce leaf corals and giant gorgonians. Tuna and other game fish hang off the sloping wall and Napolean Wrasse may accompany you along the edge. A fringing reef surrounds Medjumbe on the south and east sides and stretches for almost 200 m from Joe's Ridge to Kobus' Korner. From where the reef breaks the surface at low tide to 18m below this site is jam-packed with hard corals and soft corals of every imaginable form and hue. Although larger snapper and sweetlips patrol this area, the dive is really all about the small and the subtle. If you have a keen eye, Nudibranchs, Flatworms, Crocodilefish, Pipefish and Paperfish can all be found here and it is fantastic for macro photography and snorkelling. If you have a few dives already under your belt, then make sure that you make at least one dive at the Wall. Plunging down from only 14m to well beyond the realms of recreational diving at 800m, this is not for the faint hearted! This dramatic drop is interspersed with coral filled ledges which provide a resting point for schools of sweetlips and solitary groupers and turtles. The wall itself is adorned with scores of giant gorgonian sea fans and sea whips and is also home to a giant grouper named Cliff, who is sometimes inquisitive enough to make a close inspection of his visitors! It's dramatic, it's impressive, and it just has to be done...
