Mareja Community Conservation Project

Mareja is a community conservation project situated within the Quirimbas National Park' boundary, about 3 hours drive from Pemba.

There you can stay in the restored outbuildings of a ruined farmhouse with stunning panoramic views of the bush and the distant Pemba Bay. Local guides will take you on bush walks, seeking out the elephants, sable antelope, kudu and other wildlife that pass through the area. Accommodation is rustic and very reasonably priced (dorm beds and rooms). Camping is also an option and there are bathrooms with hot running water, excellent meals and a warm welcome from the community who have come to appreciate the value of the wildlife and the unspoilt forest environment. Proceeds go to the community and towards protecting the area.

Transfers cost $50 per person each way, or you can go with your own vehicle, but 4x4 is advisable. Children are welcome. A Quirimbas National Park fee of $8 per person will be charged extra.
