Pemba's unmatched bay - one of the three largest in the world - is the perfect setting for sailing and motor boating. Choose between a peaceful traditional dhow cruise, a visit by motor boat to the beautiful mangrove forests or a search for the perfect snorkelling spot. The dhow is synonymous with coastal East Africa. It is a traditional triangular-sailed Arab boat that has been sailing in the area for millennia, carrying slaves, travellers, trade goods and fishermen all over the Indian Ocean. Both the design and the sailing methods have remained mostly unchanged over the centuries, and dhows continue to work in large numbers throughout East Africa.
In Pemba, you can experience the romance of sailing the azure waters of Pemba Bay in a traditional handcrafted dhow called the Vagabundo. It has comfortable seating and shade, and is ideal for families and groups. Day trips depart at 08h00 and return at 14h00 and include lunch and soft drinks. A4Away is a 34 ft Catamaran based in Pemba offering either half-day or full-day sailing charters in and around Pemba's infamous deepwater bay with stops for snorkelling and some snacks / lunch. Alternatively, charter the boat for a minimum 4 night charter to the Quirimbas to visit popular destinations such as Ibo, Matemo, Rolas, Pangane and Macaloe.
