Dhow safaris
The dhow is synonymous with coastal East Africa. It is a traditional triangular-sailed Arab boat that has been sailing in the area for millennia, carrying slaves, travellers, trade goods and fishermen all over the Indian Ocean. Both the design and the sailing methods have remained mostly unchanged over the centuries, and dhows continue to work in large numbers throughout East Africa.
In Pemba, you can experience the romance of sailing the azure waters of Pemba Bay in a traditional handcrafted dhow called the Vagabundo. It has comfortable seating and shade, and is ideal for families and groups. Day trips depart at 08h00 and return at 14h00 and include lunch and soft drinks. She is skippered by experienced sailors who will take you to pristine reefs and coral outcrops, and you may be lucky enough to see Pemba's resident dolphins, or even migrating humpback whales between July and November.
