Anvil Bay in the Maputo Special Reserve offers something new in Mozambique: a safari-style lodge right on the edge of the beach. 9 individual casinhas are set where the dune forest meets unspoilt beach and ocean, with beach bar, lounge and restaurant centrally placed. Safari on the Beach means luxury linen under thatch and canvas, ocean safaris to swim with wild dolphins, or guided walks in the sand forest to look for birds and wildlife.
Each casinha on stilts comes with luxury indoor and outdoor showers, and a private dining deck, also ideal for star gazing. Families are well catered for with a family casinha that sleeps 4 or two adjacent casinhas for small groups. Breakfast is a generous affair, with fresh fruit, freshly baked muffins and hot food served on the beach. Morning activities could include whale watching or snorkelling. The beach bar is the ideal spot for a light lunch and for pre-dinner drinks. In between, enjoy the beach or explore the footpaths into the interior of the reserve. At dinner, expect fresh seafood and locally farmed produce, expertly cooked with Mozambican flair.
Anvil Bay is a genuinely sustainable enterprise. It was built to have a minimal ecological footprint in an area of rich biodiversity, keeping construction to a minimum. The lodge is owned by a local community trust, and actively participates in conservation activities including protecting turtle nesting beaches.
Access to the lodge is easiest by spectacular helicopter transfer from Maputo airport (25 minutes), but land transfers are also available from Maputo (5 hours) or the Kosi Bay border post with South Africa (3 and a half hours). Self-driving is another option, a 4x4 is essential!
