There can’t be many better ways to explore the delightful Quirimbas Archipelago than on a comfortably updated traditional sailing dhow, 5 days/4 nights island hopping and enjoying fully serviced camping on the beaches of some of Mozambique’s most beautiful islands. Add in three nights of relaxation and style in Ibo Island Lodge’s tastefully restored water-front mansions, and it’s a package that’s hard to beat.

The dhow & kayak island hopping cruises start and end at Ibo Island with the prevailing winds (with an outboard motor for back-up), so the itinerary varies between Mogondula Island – with its salt water lagoon and heaps of birdlife – a visit to traditional fishing communities in the Ulumbwe river mouth, stunning Matemo’s pristine southern beaches and Macaloe Island or the Pangane Peninsula, and the Arimba headland, uninhabited Mefunvo island, Quisive with its amazing sandbank, and historical Quirimba, neighbour to Ibo. Either way, you’ll enjoy peaceful sailing, snorkelling on outstanding coral reefs, kayaking in the clearest turquoise waters and the chance to see turtles, dolphins and even humpback whales in season.

Once back on Ibo, end the perfect adventure in fine luxury & colonial comforts at Ibo Island Lodge.  A range of activities are provided, including complementary tours of the historical town, scuba diving, bird-watching, mangrove exploration and more. Or just lounge by the pool in their shady garden with a G&T, your choice!

Ibo Island Lodge is the only operator to offer such tented mobile dhow & kayak cruises in the Quirimbas, and their many years of experience in the area coupled with knowledgeable guides make this tryly the best way to discover the extraordinary beauty of the coast of Northern Mozambique.

For those on a tighter budget accommodation arrangements can be made at the lovely Miti Miwiri Guesthouse.

Ibo Island is approximately 50 nautical miles north of Pemba and can be accessed only by air or road from Pemba (slightly over 200km)

Kaskazini can arrange air transfers from Pemba, a scenic 30 minute flight over the Quirimba islands, which is by far the fastest and most convenient option to Ibo.

 Please contact us for rates.

The other alternative is a rather long and bumpy drive to Tadanhangue, close to Quissanga, from where you can catch a boat. Remember the boats can only cross on the high tide.
