Chitengo Camp, now managed by Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari, approximately 15km from the park gate, was the Gorongosa park’s original headquarters and was first built in 1941. It used to be a hive of activity and attracted thousands of tourists each year until it closed in 1983 during the Civil War. The camp was mostly destroyed in the fighting, but it reopened in 1995 and is now fully functional. The new air-conditioned rondavel cabanas are very comfortable with en-suite bathrooms with hot water and mosquito nets over the beds. Wireless Internet and televisions are available on request. The lodge has a swimming pool, a restaurant serving good food, and a bar. Newly renovated camping facilities are also available.
Activities are all charged extra and include early morning and sunset game viewing drives; trips to Mount Gorongosa; a trip to Vinho Community (take a 30 - 45 minute walk with a guide to the community of Vinho just outside the Park boundary. It is a 2km walk to the Pungue River, with some birding along the way. At the Pungue River there will be a short trip across the river in a traditional canoe); or the Bué Maria Sundown trip which lasts between 2-3 hours. A leisurely game drive takes visitors to Bué Maria which overlooks the Pungue River to experience the beauty of a spectacular sunset.
The park closed during the rainy season mid December to March.
