Are you looking for a tourism experience that you know will directly support local conservation and education initiatives? Casa das Garças on Ibo Island is a small, conservation-oriented guest house that came into being as the result of collaboration between the Quirimbas National Park and Instituto Oikos, an Italian NGO. Sleeping 20 in six en-suite bungalows and two family bungalows, Casa das Garças enjoys an exceptional location on the edge of the sandflats that are home to the herons that give it its name, and a beautiful view over the sunset.

The accommodation is simple but comfortable, built using traditional materials and building techniques, with electricity and hot (solar) running water throughout. Wi-Fi is available in the sea-view restaurant and common areas, and natural ventilation makes air conditioning unnecessary.

The guesthouse is used as a base for collaborative research between local and international universities, and is a centre for environmental education and research. It actively promotes educational and training opportunities for park staff and the local community, as well as encouraging guests to support local businesses and restaurants.

As elsewhere on Ibo, activities revolve around the sea, with snorkelling equipment and paddle boards available for guests, as well as bicycles to explore the island fully. An ethical option for your stay on Ibo.

Rates inclusive of breakfast. From:
$60 - single room
$70 - double room
$100 - family room (3 people)
$120 - family room (4 people)

Casa das Garças is located next to Praça dos Herois, close to the fort on Ibo Island.

Kaskazini can arrange air transfers from Pemba, a scenic 25 minute flight over the Quirimba islands, which is by far the fastest and most convenient option to Ibo.

The other alternative is a rather long and bumpy drive to Tandanhangue, close to Quissanga, from where you can catch a dhow. Remember the boats can only cross at high tide.

We also offer safe, reliable 4x4 road transfers that take approximately 3,5 hours in the dry season and as long as 6 hours in the wet season, followed by a one hour motorised boat trip to the island.

Our office hours are:
Mondays to Fridays 08h00 - 15h00
