Maputo, situated on the shores of the Indian Ocean, is the capital and largest city of the country.  For centuries Maputo has been influenced by travellers and traders from Africa, Asia and Europe.

Founded as a port town by the Portuguese, during the colonial era, Lourenço Marques, as it was then called, drew visitors from all over sub-Saharan Africa to sample its fine prawns, busy night-life and European atmosphere.

The city was badly damaged during the prolonged civil war, and many buildings were significantly degraded. However, Maputo is on the rise again.  It has become a melting pot of peoples and cultures.  It is now a modern and eclectic city with many pavement cafes, jazz bars and restaurants open late into the night, a vibrant arts scene, including drama, music and visual arts.

Visitors to the city can enjoy the bustling local market, the famous old fort and the many architectural and historical landmarks.

The Elephant Reserve and Kruger National Park are within easy reach for safaris and day trips.
